The Gemmells, Frank Victoria, and magical heroes

Well, ‘Tymon’s Flight’ missed out on winning the two Gemmells it was shortlisted for this year, but I’m still very stoked about making it to the finals. As you’ve probably heard me say before, I’m a fan of both NK Jemisin and Blake Charlton, and it was a great thrill just to be there on the list with them… Now, I feel beholden to try out both Sanderson and Hinks! I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

Besides which, my lovely agent made it to the awards ceremony in London, and was able to give an entertaining and eye-opening account of the evening to me, sitting here on the other side of the world. It sounds like it was enormous fun. The ceremony was held at the Magic Circle, a theatre that has seen shows staged by the greatest magicians of the past – my hero, Houdini, among them… Ooooh, the stories, I can just imagine… LovelyAgent said moreover that a main event of the evening was the auction to raise funds for next year’s Gemmell ceremony – where one of the sale items was a cameo part in Scott Lynch’s next novel. Lucky auction winner: I’m jealous. 🙂

In other news, in order to console himself for the loss of a Gemmell, Frank Victoria sat down this weekend and concocted some comic-book magic of his own. I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you guys. For anyone familiar with the Marvel Thor character… this image will Ragna-rock your world (sorry, couldn’t resist.) All characters belong to the Marvel universe, no copyright infringement intended, etc etc. Click twice to see a larger version:
