Helen Lowe makes Ursula Bethell residency!

I’m utterly thrilled to pass on the news that my good friend Helen Lowe, author of the ‘Wall of Night’ series out with Orbit and Harper Eos, has secured a prestigious Ursula Bethell Creative Writing residency at the University of Canterbury! Now, Helen of course leads a successful double life as a poet, but I wonder if she’s the first NZ fantasy author to have a look-in at the residency? Might be worth finding out, and if so, celebrating that milestone, too… 🙂

Anyway, read all about it in her own words, here. Congratulations, Helen!

Hi Mary: thank you so much for your unstinting support for my success. I am not sure whether or not I am the first but there would definitely be relatively few for an adult (ie not kids) specualtive fiction project–although i believe Eleanor Catton who has the Michael King for next year has identified her project as a specualtive fiction quartet. And Elizabeth Knox has probably held some residencies etc, although her Dreamhunter duology is YA.

I bet you’re among a very select group of adult specfic writers honoured in such a way. By the gods, is fantasy finally going mainstream??

It’s started to happen with film/TV so why not books? Why not, I say?!

Well, I suppose it only remains for us to do what we do every night, Pinky… Try to take over the world!
