Sir Julius Vogel Awards – why I like ’em

They’re cool, they’re Kiwi, they’re designed by Weta Workshop, and recently some very special people I know have won them: Helen Lowe, Paul Tobin, Karen Healey, Anna Caro and Simon Litten… as well as my very own cover artist and husband supreme, Frank Victoria! 😀 (Please forgive the extra emphasis, I’m so proud of him.)

Congratulations to all the winners. This year had a good, strong shortlist with a distinctive New Zealand flavour! READ THESE BOOKS, everyone. Especially New Zealanders – support your local sff writers and artists… they’re worth it.

Helen Lowe has the full list of winners, and an account of the night!

Mary, you are right to be proud of Frank–he has done a wonderful job of all your covers. And although disappointed for Fitz and the interior map for Heir, I am absolutely delighted for Frank and for you. I think it was a very strong field this year, and in more than one category, ie Novel, YA Novel and Short Story were both very strong fields as well. Get well soon–I’ll get that reading up as soon as I can. And hope that you won’t be disappointed!

Thank you so much, Helen! Just surfacing from one leg of travel in San Fran – and heading over to your blog shortly to read the rest of the SJV saga!
