An aside: Helen Lowe asks ‘are writers thieves…’

I wanted to link to a couple of interesting posts by fellow NZ writer of speculative fiction, Helen Lowe. Helen recently interviewed fantasy author Daniel Abraham on her blog. It’s a great series of questions and he’s a wonderful author to discover!

During that interview Mr Abraham pointed out that all writers are thieves. This sparked off a couple of comments in the post, and Helen’s subsequent entry in which she explores the question. Good reading! 🙂

Short answer to the question: yes, of course. Because there is nothing new under the sun and no one can claim to be 100% original. Even the question: “Are Writers Thieves?” has been asked before, innumerable times. So it’s all derivation and thievery, skulduggery and copying. And the best thieves are the ones who make you think they have come up with a new idea…

Thanks for the shout out, Mary–am looking forward to spending time with you and Frank and speaking some ‘good words’ for the books come Sunday. 🙂
